Still Need Help?
If you still can't find what you're looking for or need help getting started, ask a librarian!
Someone will be at the reference desk on the ground floor of Hoover Library to help you with your research from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Fridays, and 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Sundays.
If you can't make it to the library, use our online Ask a Librarian form! You will receive an answer by the following business day.
You can also make an appointment to work one-on-one with a librarian by stopping by the Reference Desk in person, calling us on the phone (at 410-857-2281), or submitting a request online using our Ask a Librarian service.
Where To Begin
Welcome to the Cinema subject guide!
There are a number of tabs at the top of the page that will help you with your research.
A good way to begin is by searching the library catalog for books, CDs, and DVDs. You can also browse the shelves. Film studies books are generally found in the following call number ranges:
- 790 Recreational and performing arts
- 791 Public performances
- 800 Literature and rhetoric (for books about screenwriting)
You can find the books you are looking for by locating the tag on the end of each book shelf that indicates the number range of the books on that shelf:

Another great way to start is by searching for journal articles. The Databases tab at the top of this guide will direct you towards a few that are especially useful for doing research in cinema.
Please Note: Our collection of DVDs and VHS tapes is currently located behind the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the library. After looking up a film you'd like to check out in the catalog, write down the call number (ex. DVD 0123) and bring it with you to the desk. We'll find the item and check it out to you!
As always, if you need help, just ask a librarian!
